Career Fair
The event had been hyped for weeks - career day at the French Culinary Institute!
When it finally happened I found it rather disappointing. Representatives of maybe around 30 possible employers were set up in the dining room, mobbed by hundreds of culinary students willing to give their first-born child for a chance to intern in their restaurants.
The funny thing was that some of the lesser known restaurants were out there pimping their goods - giving out menues and saying things like "Well if you love French food you have to come dine with us sometime soon".
Pretty amazing.
It wasn't a waste of a day though, in a way it was a relaxing atmosphere to mingle and meet other students and alumni. One guy present had graduated the school in 1999 and here he was, resume in hand hoping to get hired by one of the big ones. He admitted that things did not go as well as he had expected since he graduated - his life since then had basically been a succession of minimum wage jobs.
That was a bit of a bummer and it certainly triggered an avalanche of thoughts on my career move.
Then, a short while later I slipped into my uniform ready to tackle the night and all felt good again...
Smart career move or not - I love being in the kitchen, with my people, doing what we love to do.
